Dear Sweetheart

Your dear letter received this morning, a thousand thanks. Yes, it’s too bad this gasolene order prevents all of my joy riding on Sundays with the girls. I hope, however, they will not shut down on oats and hay. I can stand the withdrawal of the Marmon horse-power, but I hope the Fuel Administration will spare the other horse power—Videt and Misty Morn.

I hope the formula will correct, combined with the local treatment—of Zinc Oxide and Boric acid ointment equal parts. Watch for any cause of local irritation, such as soap, damp underclothing etc. I don’t think the Ivory soap would afford any source of irritation. And, I am sure Margaret is very careful about his clothing, so it must be from an internal cause—such as an improper formula.

The Secretary & Miss Eleanor were anxious for me to go with them to-night and return here next Tuesday morning. I would love dearly to do this. But, Miss E is not up to playing golf—confidentially, she is in bed to-day. Saturday morning, as you know, is the Presidents one big day for recreation and eighteen holes of golf; then he is counting on playing Monday morning. In addition, I should treat his nose every third day—but I could omit the latter. As I was away last Sunday and he would not say no, but he would think some—Taking it all in all, I thnk that I should keep quiet and stay on the job. If you knew all the little secrets in the case and my feelings, I feel sure you would agree with me. Much as I hate to miss being with you—my precious darling. I love you more & more every day I see you. And, I miss you terribly since I left you last Tues Monday night.

I saw Mrs. EB McLean yesterday. She is coming to the White for a months sojourn. Be sure to call on her. Remember, I did not get young Ned a present because you told me not to as you wanted to do it. I told her this, so let’s keep the same story in the family.

This is a secret—The President is planning to go to California & through the West—liberty loan speeches etc—leaving here about September 26th and be absent about two or three weeks. This is only tentative now—not definitely settled. WG Mc doesn’t like the idea—but is fine about it all. He and I had a long talk about it last night. He is a good sport.

Don’t let those ladies jolly you too much about my good qualities. Remember good men are scarce down there.

Dr Rixey is better to-day. I am dining with Mrs. Buckingham & Miss Freeman to-night.

Tell Margaret her book contains The Presidents autograph & is safe in the White House. I was keeping it for her return; will mail to her if she wishes it. So glad M. Portales has been away—will phone her to-night without fail.
