My dearest darling,

My thoughts have been with you all this day. I longed for it to be last Sunday when we were together. It has been another very hot day. I had lunch with Mr. Ross—spent a long time helping Mr. Forster arrange the Western tour for the President. It is going to be a terrible hard trip on him. It is a job to work out the details at this end now. Went for a long motor ride with the President, Mrs. Wilson, Miss Margaret and Randolph Bolling, this afternoon.

I am putting my pay check which is a little less than $80000 in the American and Security & Trust Company, on August 1st. I’ll let you know if I check on it any for bills.

The Hon. Josephus sent for me yesterday for my advice concerning a new chief for the Bureau of Navigation as Admiral Blue is placed on the retired list—bad health, and not expected to live long. We can not agree on a successor to Blue, so far. The Selection Board for Medical Officers are also far apart on agreements, at this juncture of the proceedings.

Every one in Washington seems to be in a fighting mood these hot days. But I suppose most of them will calm and cool down soon. Hope the boys are well and behaving fine. As there is so much summer complaint previlent, suppose it is better, for August, anyway, to continue Gordon on walker—Gordon milk. With all my love—Ever

Your devoted
