Text

Dear Governor:

The reception given to your answer to the Pope by the press and, indeed, by the people of America, is spontaneous and enthusiastic beyond expectation. Even the Providence Journal, that is so proally that it forgets to be American, joins the generous chorus.SpringRice comes in the morning, and I shall have an opportunity to get his mind. If he accepts it, we need not fear but that it will be welcomed everywhere.

Affectionately yours,
EM House
Magnolia, Massachusetts.
