Text

Extract from letter of Sir Horace Plunkett.

"The admiration of the President grows and grows. Some time ago I had a conversation with Arthur J. Balfour upon the respective places in history which Lincoln and his great successor would occupy. I was delighted to find that our friend had no difficulty at all in making up his mind as you and I would have wished. I sometimes think that it was entirely owing to your intimacy with the First Lord of the Admiralty that he subsequently became the obvious, and indeed the necessary, man for his present post.

I had a long talk with the Prime Minister today, largely about the United States which he is getting to know. I do wish it were possible for you to come over and get as intimate with him as you were with Balfour. However, I daresay you are doing bigger work where you are."
