Text
My dear Dr Hazen,
I want to express to you again my gratitude for the valuable present of Elliot’s Debates which your generosity prompted you to make me yesterday, and my gratification that books I shall have so many occations to use, and use familiarly, should come to me from you. They will be companions of my working hours and will seem something more than authorities, and something better because they represent a valued and refreshing friendship. In short, their value will be not a little enhanced in my view because they were given to me by you. Certainly, too, you knew the appropriate day on which to make such a present!
