Hon. John Bassett Moore,
Department of State.
Thank you very warmly indeed for your letter accompanying the note which you so kindly drew up at my request concerning the Mexican situation, and also for the very interesting and useful enclosures. I had quite forgotten how close an analogy to the present situation existed in 1857.
May I not give myself the pleasure of saying how indispensible your counsel and assistance are?
