Supplementing our telephone conversation of last night I want to add that I believe that a sound currency bill can be worked out along the lines suggested by Mr. Untermyer and one which Primus and Senator Owen will probably accept.
His plan is not different from the one we have in mind excepting that it is his purpose to have the Government issue all currency and to be responsible for its payment.
After talking to you I explained it, over the - telephone, much more fully to Phythias and he also thought that something might be worked out that would be satisfactory.Untermyer tells me that some of the bankers here would approve such a measure.
The difficulty is that Untermyer wantes too large a share in the making of the measure but I think this can be overcome by bringing about a general agreement between Primus, Pythias, Owen and Glass, after first getting Untermyer committed to it.
I understand the objections to having him in conference, at the same time, an hour with you would do wonders towards bringing about the desired result.
Everyone goes with him and at the lunch that he gave Mr. Bryan the other day there met at his home people of all creeds and conditions. There was a strange mingling of the interests and the reformers and I do not believe that a conference with him would do any harm. Pythias or Owen could get him to Washington and when he was there you could arrange to see him for an hour in the evening and it is quite possible that no one would know.
