The President left the White House at 23,15 to play golf at the Washington Country Club, Virginia. He was accompanied by Dr. Cary T. Grayson, Secret Service men James Sloan and Wheeler. We played eleven holes of golf. The President won by two holes. We went for an hours ride through Rock Creek Park, returning to the White House at six thirty. Dined at seven. Present Secretary Tumulty and Dr. Grayson. The President read to us, after dinner, about- Mr. Dooley on the Mexican War. When he was about half through an important dispatch arrived from Secretary Bryan about the Mexican situation. All three os retired to the President’s study, where he read the document to Secretary Tumultty and myself. It was favorable news, from the special envoy John Lind.

The President had Dr. Albert Shaw, Edidtor of the Review of Reviews, to lunch.
Present; The President, Dr. Shaw and Dr. Grayson. Dr. Shaw and the President were at Johns Hopkins University together. They discussed Mexican affairs. Currency. Farming in Loudon County. Virginia, where-th Dr. Shaw owns a farm. Dr. Shaw gave Mr. Bryan’s Definition of a farmer and an agriculturist. A Farmer is one who makes his money on the farm, and spend it in the city. An Agriculturist we- makes his money in the city, and spends it on the farm.

The President retired at 10.15, after receiving the usual High treatment Frequency Treatment given by his physician.
