My dear Cary

Reckon you have not forgotten me from our Wm & Mary days. I want to make a request of you in regards to an application I’ve made to the Secty of the Navy as to an appointment as Chaplain in the Navy. I know you can be of great use by saying a word to the good President, I dont know whether he names the men or the Secty, however it may be, I am desirous of serving my Country in event of war especially

I can get all sorts of endorsement here & in Virginia—I am now Chaplain-in-Chief—of the Military Depmt. Knights of Pythias, whose parent organization represents nearly a million men.

I am proud of all the good things I hear of you, especially what Ty Cobb told me recently in Detroit.

Fraternally
