Dear Cary

It has been so long since we mett that I expect that you have nearly forgotten me. But as your father was a life long friend of mine & we were for many years church members & vestry-men of the Episcopal church at Brandy & as your brother Henry & sister Mrs. Rixey were very near & dear friends of mine & we were very intimate friend in our young days when they lived at “Salubria” near Stevensburg, I take the liberty of writing to you to say that I am a candidate for the Orange post office & as the present postmaster Thomas W. Carter the republican incumbent for 16 years has sent in his resignation, I presume the President will soon make an appointment to fill this office. I see from the papers that you are President Wilson’s private physician & very near to him. I write to ask if you will, help me by recommending me for the job. I have been a life long democrat & have always been a great admirer of Woodrow Wilson. We were at the University of Virginia about the same time years ago & I have since watched his public career with much interest & was the first man in this county to advocate him for the presidency. I sent my application to the Post Master General some time ago. I can refer him to anyone in Orange County where I have lived near Rapidan for 14 years & have been a patron of the post office since the RFD2. was started some ten years ago. Can also refer to our congressman Mr. CC Carlin & our two United States Senators, M:—Martin & Swanson. Thanking you for any help you may render me in this matter I remain ever your friend
