Dear Sir

The writer has noted with considerable regret that our esteemed President Wilson has entered into a nervous break-down, and having gone through two nerve break-down himself, is writing you feeling that he possibly can make a suggestion for Mr. Wilson’s treatment, which might be very beneficial.

My last break-down began March 4th, 1918, and lasted until March 4th, 1919, during which time believe that I visited practically every big specialists in Philadelphia, with the possible exception of Dr. Dercum, but strange as it may seem, did not get any two of them to agree on the exact method of treatment, excepting that most of them, in a general way, decided on more or less rest. One specialists advised playing tennis, another one absolute rest, and incidentally, I followed this plan and, as I gather from the newspaper, this is the treatment you are about to subject President Wilson to, and I feel that this was the one type of treatment that kept me a nervous invalid so long.

Now, I am writing you because most specialists never experienced a nevrve break-down, and are working only on theory. It might be to the point to call your attention to the fact that Dr. Wier Mitchell, who was the recognized authority in his day for nerve treatment, when he had a nerve break-down himself, went to Europe, with practically no faith in the treatment which he had been advocating. Now, having gone through two of these break-downs, the writer feels that he speaks from experience, and having had practically every form of treatment thrust upon him, and experienced the results which he did not get, would say emphatically to lay off the rest treatment, and the whole purpose of this letter is to get you to read and treat the President along the lines as suggested in DuBois’ Book “The Psychic Treatment of Nervous Disorder."

The writer believes that he would have been practically a nervous invalid today unless he had gone ahead with the treatment as suggested in this book, and by following same as outlined the writer found quick and speedy recovery. The book is published by Funk & Wagenhall, and should you not be able to quickly get a copy, the writer would be glad to give you his.

Being so thoroughly convinced through his own experience, having tried all cures and finding them failures, and knowinhg that the secret of speedy recovery lies in the principal’s advocation of DuBois’ Book, I take the liberty of calling this book to your attention.

Very sincerely, yours

HL Bogardus
