Text

Dear Sweetheart

I failed to mention about my address to the Bible Society of Men which I delivered this morning. It is the under the auspices of the Church of the Covenant. There were about two hundred men present this morning at ten o’clock. My subject was the medicine of the Old Testament. Rev. Dr Wood introduced me. Every one present came forward and shook my hand after the talk—or at the Conclusion of my paper, and said nice things, so I suppose it was not so bad. Senator Mark Smith spoke to this class last Sunday and Senator Owen is to be the speaker next Sunday.

It has been raining hard all day. This morning, I came here and fixed no I. He is confined to the house, but fortunately no one would expect to go out on such a rainy day. Of course, this is a very sore and disagreeable day for him—But, I feel confident of much benefit from the course pursued. He is a wonder and has a wonderful nerve. I love him more and more—more than I did yesterday. Miss E. is superlative fine.

I had lunch here and came back for dinner.

I had a bad attack of neuralgia to-day. This afternoon I slept for more than two hours and I am relieved from the pain to-night. BMB is in New York still. I spent the night here last night. I am staying with Mr. Ross to-night. He is as fine as ever. We enjoyed our dinner out with Ned McLean last night. Ned showed me what Mrs. McLean wrote about you. It was fine and she shows the proper judgment in her estimate of you.

Hope Gordon is enjoying his new diet. Tell Margaret her book is autographed and safe in the White House. I slipped away from the family here to pen you these lines. Good night my precious darling—and remember there is a fellow on the banks of the Potomac who loves you with all his heart—
