Dear Sir:
Several years ago the New York Herald stated that during a scourge of dysentery in New York City, causing many deaths, the health department held a consultation with eminant physicians and the result was the publication of the prescription quoted below which, the Herald further stated, was the most effective cure they had found.
For Dysentery.
“Equal parts of tincture of rhubarb, tincture of Opium, tincture of capsicum, tincture of camphor, and essence of peppermint. When compounded take ten to thirty drops in a wine glass of water, every twenty minutes, until relief is obtained.”
I coppied this prescription at the time and have kept it ever since. I have used it myself with good results on a few occasions and some friends to whom I gave a copy of the formula when they were effected with dysentery informed me afterwards that it was the best remedy they had used.
I do not want to appear presumptous or impertinent but thinking that it might proove beneficial, and having no selfish nor purely personal interest in the matter, I take the liberty of sending it to you.
Very sincerely,
Thomas W. Sexton
