Dearest Trude

I am “on the lift,” as the darkies say, & while in bed have the first free moment to put my thoughts on paper & tell you how distressed I am about your accident—Bless your heart I wish I was there to pet & take care of you—but do go slow to give it time to get strong—

Your dear letter was a joy & I wanted to answer long ago—but you know how impossible it is to do things in this house. Of course Cary gives you all the news—& I was so glad he had another little trip last week—He took lunch with us yesterday & he & W. are playing golf today—Helen got back Wednesday— yesterday—& Nell has just come in to say she & Mac. leave for the White tonight—& she will stay 2 weeks—she will give you direct news of us—

It is still hot & enervating here—&, but for our wonderful five days on the North Shore, I don’t believe we could have weathered it—but that was a life saver & we did have such a good time—

Mother & Bertha have decided to stay in Va—until the 16th—as the lady they board with is giving up her house in Oct. & may not open it again next year as her son is in France & her husband away doing war work—

I made Edith Benham go away for a week—& she left on Tuesday—so I now attend to my own mail which does take a lot of time—

I am so sorry you are having trouble with Gordon’s food—I know it worries you & keeps you anxious—but hope it will adjust itself quickly—give him a big kiss for me—

Suppose Cary wrote you “Charles R.” is off to China where a cCaravan will be waiting & he will go into the Dessert—” Think of going off like that in these days of war & turmoil it is so deliciously like him!

Forgive pencil—& a stupid letter—and know it brings you all my love—

“Miss Ede”
