Text

My dear Mr. President

It has come to me very directly that the publishers of the Vorwarts, the great Yiddish daily in New York, are boasting of their influence in Washington, even declaring that the White House stands between them and the law. This is nonsense, of course, but I do feel it well to lay the situation before you. In the first days of the European war, the Vorwarts was violently anti-German, but with great suddenness, it swung around and became the most consistent pro-German paper in the country. It is absolutely responsible for the demoralization of the east side, and is the most dangerous influence that we have to combat. Our investigations force me to believe that Vorwarts is also furnishing the money to maintain the New York Call, the Russky Gollos, and Il Proletario. Russky Gollos is a Russian paper, bitterly complained of by the Russian Ambassador, and Il Proliterio is an Italian paper that has been barred from the mails.

This is merely for your information, and requires no answer.

Respectfully,
George Creel
