Text

My dear Mr. President

In view of what you told me a few days ago you will be interested to know that Brigadier General McLachlan, attache of the British Embassy here, called yesterday upon General Bliss to say that he was directed by the General Staff in London to say that they wished it understood that they urged us to place our whole military strength in France and that they had never advised our undertaking any movement elsewhere.

Perhaps some of the newspaper speculations in this country had been brought to their attention; or it may be an evidence of some division of counsels at homeT

Respectfully,
Newton D. Baker

he President.
