As you doubtless know, the first naval aviator to lose his life under our Flag in this war was Ensign A. D. Sturtevant, of this city, who was killed last week in England.
I have been private secretary to his Father (Mr. C. L. Sturtevant) for twenty years, and would like to ask if it would be possible for you to write a letter to him expressing your sympathy. He has told me several times he would appreciate such a letter from the President more than anything else.
Perhaps it is your custom to do this anyway, but if it is not, may I request that you do it, in this case? It will help a great heart already tried almost beyond endurance.
Please do not mention my name in the matter, as I wish your letter to appear entirely spontaneous and unsolicited.
I realize fully the burdens this Great War has laid on your shoulders, and the many calls on your time, but if you can grant this request, it will be deeply appreciated.
Respectfully(Miss) Grace P. Brereton
