THE PRESIDENT.

I beg to offer my warmest congratulations upon the Senate’s passage of the tariff bill. The country now understands substantially the basis upon which it must operate and I predict that business which has been to some extent marking time pending this legislation will take on great activity. I trust the currency bill will also pass without needless delay. I cannot refrain from expressing to you my profound admiration for the superb generalship and infinite tact you have shown throughout this trying summer of tariff and scurrency agitation. These measures were promised by the party. They were indispensible for the country’s welfare and you have redeemed your party pledges honestly, wisely and in a manner that reassures those who feared the result of proposed changes. The country applauds your masterful leadership and will I am convinced approve with great unanimity the business conditions that will result from these measures.

James R. Gray.
