My dear Mr. PresidentYour telegram is received and I am quite overcome by the great honor you suggest doing me and by the very complimentary terms in which you express your offer.
Yet, in fairness to my family and myself and in justice to the administration and you, I must take a brief time to consider whether I ought to undertake the responsibilities of so great an office as those involved in becoming the American Ambassador in London.
I will give you a definite answer by the end of the week. If you ought to have it earlier, I will answer at any time you may suggest.
