Text

Dear Mr. Kent,

Thank you for telling me that the President is concerned over our case, and in doubt about it.

If he is in doubt after hearing only the one side presented by those concerned in the prosecution, his doubts would resolve in my favor if I had an opportunity to present my side to him as it is.

I know he would not swerve for any personal or political reason from his one task and resolution to prosecute the war with relentless vigor toward the high aims he has set before the country. But I believe that if he could feel my attitude and my purposes as they are, he would not think an intervention in this situation altogether apart from those aims.

Is it beyond the possibilities that I should have ten minutes with him?

Yours sincerely,
Max Eastman
