My dear Doctor: I know by the papers and for the reason that you sent tpPhiladelphia for a specialist that you are much concerned about your distinguished patient. I think I know by from the press accounts and from what you have said about him the condition he is in.

I have been through a similar break myself and not only know from what I have learned from books and from what patients tell me but I have had the personal experience.

I presume you will accept and know that the hypophosphites are litte if any good. Dr. EB Forbes of head of the Department of Nutrition of the Ohio State Agricultural Experiment station at Wooster Ohio writes me that “among all of the phosphorous compoundes administered as drugs the hypophosphites are the most inactive and the least valuable”. The Rockfeller Institutestells me that Dr. Forbes has done more work in this line than anyone. Dr. Forbes told me also that inorganic calcium phosphate uncombined with protein is readily absorbed and retained by all animals including infants. The the independence of the metabolism of nitrogen and calcium phosphate is very marked:. But there is no phosphorous retention on a nitrogen free diet. I write this as I believe it is something quite new.

The thing that I have used myself is fresh clean wheat bran one pint to three pints of water, and boil five minutes and strain through collander. Salt to taste and flavor with fruit juices if desired. Drink one-half glass to a glassful at a time. Raise the nerve power by a bitter tonic, nux or strycinine, columblo? This worked and still works like magic with me. No one could be closer out than me and come back.

Another thing I use to raise the tone of the sympathetic system is an epsom salts bath. One cup of epsom to sixteen of water and have the water hot. Sponge the body all over five or more times or better still for ten minutes if patient is strong enough. Use no soap. This energises the skin, opening the pores, I have felt the effects of a bath all the forenoon when taken in the morning. Try this in chronic rheumatism. I have had results almost like a miracle after the patient had been under care of the best physicians for a year.

I hope my suggestions may be of help to you.

Sincerely

Dr. John E. Geary
