TUESDAY.
We arrived at Paris at ten o’clock in the morning. During the afternoon the President conferred with American members of the Peace Conference. In the evening the President read an article by AG Gardiner from the London News dealing with the peace precedents, also from Gardiner’s book on the King of Italy, Theodore Roosevelt and Lord Reading. The State Department sent him a draft of a proclamation to be issued on the death of Colonel Roosevelt but the President rewrote it, in order to include mention of Colonel Roosevelt’s Spanish war record. In his revision, the President credited Mr. Roosevelt with leadership in the awakening of the demand for public justice in America and paid tribute to his great work in the defense of the people’s rights against large interests. This proclamation also declared a public holiday in the United States on the day of the funeral.
