Text

USS MAYFLOWER,

My dear Cleve:

You always think of me at the right time and always send me the sort of message my heart is waiting for. Whenever I write anything like the reply to the Pope my first and greatest desire is to know what men whose judgment I trust think of it, because I never entirely trust my own instinct and conclusion. A letter like yours, therefore, brings me not only the message of friendship which my heart desires, but also the reassurance which my mind craves, and I thank you for it out of a full heart.

It cheers me to hear that your loved ones are safe. I think of them very often and am grateful to God that at least some element of prudence towards America has been planted in the heart of the Turk.

Affectionately yours,
Always
Woodrow Wilson
