Text

My dear Senator

Your letter of yesterday gave me peculiar pleasure and touched me very deeply. It is generous to me beyond my deserts and assumes an altogether unfair burden of blame (if any blame be involved) for yourself and your colleagues. Personally I do not feel that there is any blame resting anywhere. All sorts of causes have contributed to the result, but none of these ought either to discourage us or to divert us for a moment from our purposes. America is the leader of the liberal thought of the world, and nobody from any quarter should be allowed to interfere with or impair that leadership without giving an account of himself, which can be made very difficult.

Gratefully and faithfully yours,

Woodrow Wilson

Hon. Key Pittman,
United States Senate.
