Text

Dear Governor

You can never know how glad I am that you have settled the shipping controversy. It has worried me more than anything recently. I did not write you of the rumors and criticisms that were current, because I felt sure you would act as quickly as you could.
Gavin McNab was here the other day. In talking of Denman he said:“I consider him intellectually able, very tenacious, not altogether trustworthy, and without any executive ability. He has no political influence in California. I believe his cleverness as a lawyer will give him the advantage over Goethals in any controversy which may arise.”
Magnolia, Massachusetts.
July 24, 1917.

Affectionately yours,
E. M. House
