Text

My dear Daniels

4 June, 1917Confidential. The other day you wrote me a note about an undertaking of the Scripps newspapers which they have put in the hands of Mr. H. P. Burton.
Can you tell me who this Mr. Burton is? A man of that name was recently sent over here by Lord Northcliffe, and I want to have as little to do with him as possible, because I don't believe in Lord Northcliffe any more than I do in Mr. Hearst and I wonder if this Mr. H. P. Burton is the man.
In hasteWoodrow WilsonHon. Josephus Daniels,Secretary of the Navy.

Cordially and faithfully yours,
