THE WHITE HOUSE

My dear Mr. Hoover
In reply to your request for a suggestion as to a successor to Judge Lindley, I am going to take the liberty of suggesting Mr. Samuel Untermyer of New York. Of course, we now know that the man who is going to fight you until the war is over is Senator Reed of Missouri. Mr. Untermyer is one of the few men who can beat him. I believe it would stop many investigations of the type which Senator Reed is conducting if it could be understood that in the various departments there was some lawyer like Mr. Untermyer who is genuinely to be feared. We have nothing to fear from investigations conceived in the right spirit, and we have every right to defend ourselves agains the other sort.
Cordially and sincerely yours,
WOODROW WILSON
