Text

Mr. President

Mr.CH Dodge has telegraphed me to aid in bringing additional influence to bear upon Mr. Mott to accept the position. I had already suggested to him that if any further pressure was needed, though your own and Mr. Dodge's words can hardly be supplemented, I would mention Mr. Cyrus McCormick, Mr. CR Crane, Dr. James L. Barton, secretary of the American Board, and Professor JW Jenks as those who would probably count for most.
I can follow Mr. Dodge's suggestions with reference to seeing Mr. McCormick and Dr. Barton, unless you prefer that I do not do so, and I myself can talk freely with Professor Jenks, if you think wise. Mr. Dodge suggests that you perhaps could influence Mr. Crane. Though deeply regretting to trouble you, I do not like to make moves that may be blunders.
Messages from these men can be sent to me here, coded, and thence forwarded or they can be sent in plain language, deferred service, as follows:
Committee, Shanghai
Mott.....
I should be glad of a brief word from you as to whether you desire to modify in any way these suggestions.

Edward C. Jenkins

The President,
Washington, DC
