Dear Mr. President:
Referring to your note of May 11, 1917, requesting weekly reports of allotments made from the $100,000,000 appropriation for “National Security and Defense,” I have to advise you that since the date of the 21st report transmitted to you by letter of the 13th instant, notices of your approval of the following additional allotments have been received at the Treasury Department:
Amount of allotments as reported in Department letter of
October 13, 1917 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - $60,500,690.94
Oct.15,1917 -- To Department of Commerce (Bureau of Standards) for
equipment to carry on metallurgical work, in the building
now under construction, including the study of steel,
alloys and metals, for use in connection with guns,
ammunition, airplanes, dirigibles, and other urgent
military and naval purposes- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 100,000.00
Oct.18,1917 -- To U. S. Food Administration, for expenditure in final
payment of preliminary expenses, covering chiefly
printing and postage, (being additional to allotments
of May 30, June 20, July 3, and July 27, 1917, and
making a total for these objects of $340,000) - - - - - - - - - - - - - 110,000.00
To date, therefore, the charges against the $100,000,000 appropriation for
“National Security and Defense” have been - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 60,710,690.94
(Of this sum the War Department is to reimburse the temporary allotment of
$35,000,000 made August 17, 1917.)
Leaving an unallotted balance October 20, 1917 of - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 39,289,309.06
Reports relating to further allotments will be furnished you weekly as requested.
