Delayed in travel by a leaky engine, by congestion of traffic due to the wreck on the New York, New Haven and Hartford railroad, and by accumulating causes, the special car bearing the President back to the national capital arrived at Union station more than two hours late.

Secretary Tumulty, in the White House automobile, met the President and Dr. Cary T. Grayson, his travel companion and physician, and took them to the White House, where they arrived at 11:45 o’clock this morning. The President’s appearance indicated that he had derived decided benefit from his four-days’ rest and recreation among the hills of New Hampshire at the summer home at Cornish. His step was springy, his eye bright, and his smile ready.

Goes Direct to His Office.

The automobile drew up at the executive offices door and the unusual happened when the President, instead of going first to the White House, descended from the auto and went direct to his workroom. The entire slate of engagements for the day had been disarranged by the lateness of his arrival and new hours were set for the expected visitors.

Secretary Tumulty was at his desk more than an hour before the President arrived. He came on an early morning train from Avon, N. J., where his family is passing the summer.

The President’s train was an hour late at New Haven, which it reached at 9:50 o’clock last night. The federal express was held to await him. The President’s train was taken over the route where earlier in the day the disastrous wreck of the Bar Harbor express occurred. The President stood on the observation platform and saw the wreckage being burned as his train moved slowly by.
