My Dear Admiral

I think you have handled the obviously difficult case of the President with great skill. I do not need to say to you that it is the hope of every good American that the President comes through. I am sure he will if intelligent care and doctoring can accomplish it. There have been many absurd reports about his condition and real trouble which I have done everything I could to dissipate and refute. Most of these reports originate in Wall Street and are circulated for outrages business reasons. The most general is that the President has been affected mentally. I have replied to these statements that I wished I were similarly afflicted if I could be as mentally alert as the President. His illness naturally provokes all sorts of reports, but I guess it is just as well not to pay any attention to them. I thought I would write an article showing the absurdity of them, and will do so if you think it advisable. I would like to have a good biographical sketch of you with your latest picture because I want to write an article telling the people just what a sort of citizen you are. You may not know it but you are a figure of real interest and one in whom there is great confidence. Will you send the material and picture to me heref within the next two or threedays? Also if the occasion offers will you not convey my best wishes to the President and Mrs. Wilson and tell them that I’m praying for his full restoration to complete health which he is sure to find if he obeys his very competent physician and admirably capable nurse.
