Mr. WT Waggoner
Fort Worth, Texas

Dear Mr. Waggoner, -

Last night I sent you the following telegram:

“IT IS DIFFICULT TO GET TRUE ESTIMATE OF TRAINER BECAUSE OF PECULIAR METHODS OF STABLE UNDER RECENT OWNERS STOP MAY I SUGGEST THAT IN ADDITION TO VESTAL YOU WOULD FIND IT SATISFACTORY TO PUT SOME HORSES WITH PRESTON BURCH WHO HAS FISHERS AND MINE STOP HE IS AN EXCELLENT MAN AND DO NOT BELIEVE YOU COULD DO BETTER STOP I PAY SEVEN DOLLARS PER DAY PER HORSE AND WOULD BE GLAD TO TAKE PERSONAL INTEREST IN YOURS ALONG WITH MINE STOP BURCH COULD EASILY HANDLE TEN OR MORE FOR YOU STOP THIS IS ONLY A PERSONAL SUGGESTIONS AND HAVE NOT MENTIONED IT TO ANYONE AND IF IT DOES NOT APPEAL DO NOT HESITATE TO DISREGARD”

The man you mentioned has been a very good trainer at times but I really dont know him well enough to recommend him. My knowledge is heresay and hence superficial. He might prove a very valuable trainer to you but I dont know him or enough about him to recommend him as the right man for you.

The suggestion I made about Burch was prompted by friendship, but at the same time I think it was a good business suggestion. Burch is a very high-grade trainer and man. His father was an exceptionally fine man and an excellent horseman. He handled all my race horses from the time I began to own race horses up to his death a few years ago. He was all gold in every sense of the word - and Preston is his son and has many of the characteristics and qualities of his father. Any arrangement you made with him would be quite a personal affair to me as our horses would be in the same stable and I would take a personal interest in them - as much as one friend could take in another’s.

Mr. Fisher has about 8 horses under Burch this year and Burch has told him frankly that several of them are not very promising. Fisher tells me that he does not expect to purchase any more for this season.

I am just giving you these facts so that it will help you in making your decision for or against placing any of your horses with Burch. As I stated in my telegram, I haven't mentioned this to anyone, and in making up your mind about this matter I hope you will not take my personal feelings into consideration - for as you say - “we talk plain to each other.”

Any arrangement you might make with Burch need not be anything permanent, and yet as time goes on and things work out satisfactorily, it might lead to a satisfactory permanent plan.

I think you should hold on to Mr. Vestal for at least twelve of your horses.

With kindest regards and best wishes, I am as ever

Your friend,
