THURSDAY,The President’s headache was still with him when he arose this morning, but he was very much cheered over the warmth of his reception in the home stamping ground of Senator Johnson. He conferred briefly with Gavin McNab and the San Francisco reception committee during the morning, thanking them for the manner in which they had made their arrangements. At noon he again was the guest of honor at a luncheon at the Palace Hotel, which had been arranged by the Chamber of Commerce of San Francisco. This luncheon was in distinct contrast to that of the day before when practically all of his hearers had been women. Today they were men – business men of the community – who followed his argument with the deepest interest. The President again took up the so-called British argument and hammered it home to his audience. Following the luncheon the Presidentisal party proceeded down Market Street to a ferry and went to Oakland. On arriving at Oaklandthe President’s proceeded in his automobile to the campus of Stamford University, where he made a brief address to the assembled students. He then returned to the Oakland Hotel, where he had dinner. A night meeting had been arranged in Oakland, and once more the auditorium was found far too small to accommodate those who wanted to see and hear the President. He referred in his speech here again to the fact that the women of the country were even more vitally interested than the men in the ending for all time of wars. He referred to the Treaty of Versailles and the League of Nations Covenant as a ninety-five per cent insurance against war. Following the meeting the President returned to his train and Oakland was left at 10:00 o’clock that night for San Diego.
