Text

Dear Mr. President

Your letter has just been handed me. You need not feel any anxiety about the insurance bill. It will certainly be passed before adjournment. The Committee will report it to the Senate on Saturday. The revenue bill will be reported the same day. The two bills will have priority of consideration and I hope they can be passed with reasonable promptness. My idea is that when these two bills are passed nothing will remain of sufficient importance to compel a continuation of the session. Some small matters may be passed at odd times, but these two important measures you may rest assured will certainly be passed, and soon after that adjournment can be had.

I agree with you that it is of very great importance that members of Congress get to their homes in order to explain the causes and conditions of the war.

Very respectfully,
Thomas S. Martin.
