Text

My dear Mr. President

I have your letter enclosing the petition of the gentlemen who observe Saturday as the Sabbath. It will give me pleasure to keep this point of view in mind when we come to arrange non-combatant service for conscientious objectors.

I am beginning to feel that nothing short of a comprehensive knowledge of Professor James's book on "Varieties of Religious Experience" will ever qualify a man to be a helpful Secretary of War.

Respectfully yours,
Newton D. Baker

The President.

Wilson, Woodrow, 1856-1924
