My dear Mr. President

Referring to the strike situation in the copper districts of Arizona and to your telegram to former Governor Hunt and his reply thereto, which have just been referred to me by direction of Mr. Forster, I have, in accordance with your instructions, appointed Governor Hunt as a Commissioner of Conciliation and telegraphed him to cooperate with Mr. McBride, whom Secretary Wilson had assigned to handle the situation in Arizona.
My latest information from Mr. McBride is that the troubles in Arizona are nearly statewide and that he preferred to handle them in a general rather than in a local way. Following out this plan he consulted with the Governor and the State Federation officials before proceeding to Globe. The Department has also instructed Mr. Joseph S. Myers, who was handling a railroad controversy in Houston, Texas, to proceed to Clifton to aid in the general situation. Messrs. McBride and Myers have had considerable experience in controversies in the copper fields of Arizona, the former having successfully negotiated the recent settlement in the Jerome district and the latter was successful in the Clifton-Morenci settlements of a year ago. The appointment of Governor Hunt has gone forward today by telegraph, and I have wired Commissioner McBride to cooperate with him.

Faithfully yours,
Louis F. Post
