Thank you for your letter of May twenty-fourth. I fear that it would not be wise for me to pursue the course you suggest, just at present at any rate, because it might look as if I were trying to straighten it out when there is really nothing to straighten out; or, it might look as if I were trying to correct mistakes which Creel is thought to have made when I do not in my heart believe that he has made any.
I cannot help believing that continued intercourse with Creel such as the newspaper correspondents will have will more and more convince them of his unusual qualities, not only of sense but of trustworthiness. I depend upon their perceptions and their candor to find those qualities out, and I have very little doubt as to the result.
In haste
Faithfully yours,
Mr. David Lawrence,
Washington, DC
