Text

My dear Senator

Allow me to acknowledge with sincere appreciation your two letters of April third and fourth. I hope that when you have occasion to write again to Mr. Scales you will tell him how genuinely I appreciate his personal attitude and the resolutions passed by the Confederate Veterans of the City of Memphis. Such things are very delightful to receive.
You speak, I feel, more generously of my recent address to the Congress than it at all deserves. If it deserves any of the praise you give it, it is because it was really and truly spoken from the heart and with a simplicity of conviction which must have robbed it of all false elements of expression.Colonel Montgomery's letter pleased me very much, and your reply to it was of course admirable. I hope that you will give him, when you have the opportunity, my personal thanks and regards.

Cordially and sincerely yours,

WOODROW WILSON
