Many, many happy returns of the day! It's very forlorn, dear, for you to be having your birthday without Frank; but then you have those two blessed treasures to make up in some degree. I hope the day will be a happy one with them, in spite of being so far away.
I'm sending you a very small birthday gift—just a little something to carry my dearest love to you, my sweet little cousin. I wish I could take its place and look in on you for at least a day or so. I'm piggy to want more when I've had two whole weeks of you, but I some how want it!Isn't it maddening, that this year when you might just as well be with Nell or she with you, you are separated by this awful danger that keeps both of you where you are! I'm mighty thankful, now, that you didn't go to Elberon early; for it would have meant your babies being in danger as well as hers; but it does seem hard luck we can't all be together.
The Smiths came to-day and so I must run to them.
