My dear Mr. President
I beg respectfully to ask that the sum of $30,000. be allotted from the fund for the National Security and Defense for use by the Bureau of Fisheries for the purpose of immediately adding to the food supply of the country as explained below.
Within the last two years the work of the Bureau of Fisheries in the single, special function of developing unused fish foods has resulted in making available to the markets not less than twenty-five thousand tons of wholesome food theretofore unused.
This process is continuous and increasing. It is, however, capable of rapid and indefinite extension. The Bureau of Fisheries has reached the limit of its capacity with present limited force and funds.
It is proposed with the fund now asked to secure an immediate increase in the production of aquatic foods on all portions of the United States coast, including Alaska, through such educational and publicity methods as have proved so successful heretofore. This involves the sending into all parts of our coasts experienced men who will show the fishermen what neglected products have a market and food value and how those foods may be obtained and sold.
Yours very truly,
[U.S. Food Administration]
Secretary
Recommended:
Commissioner of Fisheries
Food Administrator.
