Telegram July sixth from Horton, Smyrna, containing report of Colonel Poillon on fighting near Aidin (stop) It is not possible at present to request Greek Army to evacuate Smyrna region, but Conference might fix limits to Greek occupation containing relatively small hinterland, sufficient to protect Smyrna and its immediate neighborhood from attack (stop) In order to meet possible claims by Greek representatives based upon strategic arguments, we request you to instruct Colonel Poillon to name the places round Smyrna which he considers necessary for Army occjupying Smyrna to hold (stop) The present limit hoped for by Greece appears to be a line running north and south through Sali hli to Aivali on the north and to the south side of the Maeander Valley on the south (stop) This appears to us a line far beyond what is needed for the strategic protection of Smyrna (stop)
