Text

Dear Governor

I learn today for the first time that your brother-in-law and my brother-in-law are both being talked of for the Presidency of the College of the City of New York.
I did not know that Professor Elliot was being thought of, otherwise I should have discouraged the mention of Doctor Mezes’ name.mezes is not dissatisfied here and is doing splendid work, but he is a little far from the center of things for a man of his ability.Houston suggested his name to the Trustees early in the Autumn and that is how it started.
I am writing today to the friends who have been active in his behalf telling them to do nothing further and that, in my opinion, no better selection could be made than that of Professor Elliot.
I merely wanted to write this so that we may have the records straight.

Your affectionate friend,
EM House
