My dear Mr. President:
At the end of a long search for a President of the Johns Hopkins University, the trustees are inclined to put an end to it by appointing a local man, Mr. William H. Buckler. Before making a final decision they have come to The Sun office seeking our counsel and we advised that they ask you to suggest some names for their consideration. They told me that they had already appealed to you and that you had made a recommendation but that the Board had not accepted it. I then suggested that an effort be made to advise with you further.
This suggestion resulted in a postponement of action in the election of a president until July 7. At a meeting of the trustees last night a sub-committee of which Mr. B. Howell Griswold, Jr. is the head was appointed and this committee will renew the search for a president.
They asked me to go with them to see you, and Mr. Tumulty gave me an appointment for 11:30 next Thursday. Dr. W. H. Welch, Mr. Griswold and myself look forward to seeing you at that time. I sincerely hope that you may be able to give us some inspiration and practical help in a matter that means so much to Baltimore and the cause of education in general.
Most sincerely yours,
Charles H. Grasty
His Excellency, Woodrow Wilson,
The President of the United States,
Washington, DC
