                                                       Berlin SW 68

Dearest;

     The enclosed letter from Graff speaks for itself; you might return it after reading it. There seem to be to be too many "ifs" and "whens" about it and I suspect they find I would cost them too much. So, as matters stand, I don't feel much hope about this new proposition and we can only go ahead on what we know is our situation, and that is that you will be coming to Berlin at the appointed time, and you can go working on that probability, with regard to settling furniture etc. That, at all events, will be safe and as for a flat, I would not sign any contract until the latest possible, so that I would not bind myself to anything if any change were to come. This man Freeman might have some idea of his own with regard to the post Graff had in view, so we cannot build upon any mere assumption. Don't you think so too?

     Sunday forenoon I took Mary to the Schürholzes who were very pleasant and nice, and Mary is favourably impressed with the prospects and pleased with the house and the people. The other lady leaves on the 15th so Mary comes in on the 16th and we hope everything will turn out alright. Meanwhile I have been taking her about in my off-time and she has also gone walks with Winnie Hogg. Mary seems to enjoy the food here too, and seems disposed to like Berlin very well. I shall have to leave her to herself for a spell, at all events until the German elections are over. We are also threatened with various American golfers and tennis friends besides more flights to America which will keep us busy and Lochner is leaving tomorrow for Amsterdam.

     Nothing more for the present; the Pension is still topys-turvey with workmen painting and renovating all over the place. It will be very nice when its all finished.

                                                                                                              Love to all from,
                                                                                                                Doc.
