Text

13 Place de la Bourse
Paris Dec. 19

My dearest,

You remember the story about the clergyman who had received a “call” and was in the drawing room praying for guidance, but Ma was upstairs packing the trunks. Well, it is I who am packing the trunks and I Have Bought My Ticket, too, and it is dated Dec. 24, and the others are praying for guidance.

The lady stenographer, upon hearing she would have to do more accounts with fractions in them, said she wasn’t equal to them, and gave notice on the spot. Who is to do the Saturday night? Wailing and gnashing of teeth! Poor Roberts is in an awful stew and he has written Collins if I couldn’t come over once a month to put the accounts straight! Would I like to do that? Oh, I don’t mind Mr. Roberts. Certainly, if you wish…… So the future promises to be interesting.

The babes in old rose velvet eh? Oh la-la-la! I want to see them very much.

The train is due to arrive at Charing X (not Victoria), at 7.20 pm. I shall have dinner on the train and come straight home. One never knows how much delay there may be, so do not prepare any meal for me, only perhaps a cup of tea. I know the way now, and will therefore not be so late as last July, nor so fagged out and famished. I don't know how long the customs examination may take at Charing X. My big trunk I shall leave there, to be sent home by carrier.

Unless there is any urgent reason, I will not write any more, and the next thing will be a good hard huggings!!

With all my love, and hoping I shall see you all in good health and spirits,
For one last time!
(in writing)
Thine
Jack
