Mr. R. M. Reese,
Chief Clerk of Department.
Dear Mr. Reese:
Referring to your memorandum of the 14th instant addressed to heads of offices, divisions, and offices in this Department, requesting a memorandum showing in tabular form the number of colored employees in the several branches of the Department, etc., I inform you that the records in this Bureau do not give this information, and in order to secure same we would have to take a census of all our employees, or get it from the records of the Appointment Clerk. Could not the Appointment Clerk prepare the desired data for you from the Personal Placement Sheets on file in his office?
If necessary we can get the information for our service from the records of the office of the Appointment Clerk. Kindly advise me of your wishes.
Very truly yours,
James E. Jones
Chief Clerk of Bureau.
