Chicago’s proposal to … one hundred fifty thousand members in the American Red Cross is a splendid …of patriotism. In the misfortune of war men who are willing to give their lives for the defense of their country deserve to find the people they protect prepared to care for the sick and wounded. A large well organized and efficient Red Cross is essential for such a result; therefore it is both a patriotic and humane service that is rendered by...citizen of this country who becomes a member of the American Red Cross… the recognition this fact is receiving everywhere and wish you and your… mobilizing Chicago’s patriotic populous for effective service to the nation.

Woodrow Wilson.
