Text

My dear Cary

I have just seen the article. It is a pippin—It The whole thing is cleverly done & I think is done with the idea of causing a break between the President & myself— Both Hale & Kellogg denied that I had represented any ideas except my own—If Ed really wanted to help he could have written his own news but I guess he is afraid—If I were there I might make some reply but what’s the use—It is so hard to get anything out of here—The wires are down today—
