Dear Admiral Grayson

I have thought many times of our conversation of last winter when we agreed that we both wanted an administration regardless of party which would preserve something for our children—the way things are going we might almost have said for ourselves. Since then I have thought better and better of Mr. Hoover, and now that the nominations have been made there can be no question in my mind about doing all we can to secure his reelection. It is easy to sit on the side lines and criticise, but it is another matter—especially under present conditions—to try to mitigate the economic distress and bring the ship safely through the storm. I believe the measures taken (since the government quit trying to peg grain prices etc.) have been on the whole sound, and those which he has vetoed would certainly have been calamitous. As for FDR, he seems to me to be a trimmer of the first order. If we get him for President, my feeling is god help us.

If you should pass this way during the summer we would love to have you stop over with us, and if there are more than we have beds for Mrs. Rice would love to have you. Hilda joins me in best wishes to you and Mrs. Grayson

Sincerely yours,

Frederick Ayer.
