My dear Cary
Since last writing you through the Navy Department, I have received your own good letter and a cable from the Department of State appointing me Consul at Warsaw. Can I begin to express my gratitude to you? For me it was a timely lift in the right place, and your very cordial way of helping a friend you had not seen for years, nor forgotten, touched me very much.
I am delighted to go to Warsaw, which Consul Rankin, who is there, tells me is a delightful city.
I am sorry that you did not see Father and Mother when you called. As I was not sure whether I would get my promotion or not, I had barely touched on this matter in my correspondence with them, In a letter home today, I am telling them both of your great kindness to me. I shall certainly have the opportunity of thanking you in person, when next in Washington.
Your sincere and grateful friend,
Douglas Wise
